The creative industry for years has been a growing industry. Artistic, creative and full of ideas, artists, designers, technicians and artists are every day trying to provide our society with new products that generate a distinct experience. In these times of ‘economy of experience’ people’s appreciation for creative products is growing.
The Dutch government has supported the art world for decades with grants, commissions and transfer of knowledge through institutions. Now they have to save money and are cutting down harshly on the artworld: less subsidies and a raise of sales tax, so prices of art products will rise and demand for those products might decrease. The artworld is reacting with great fear; people fear for their jobs and cultural buildings which might get closed down and boarded up.
If I’ve learned one thing, with over 16 years experience in the creative industry, it’s that the public always determines the success. Artists and institutions will have to ask more from their customers and also start using alternative sources of income and earning models. It is time that fear turns into combative and creative entrepreneurship. How can you or your institution deal with the changing landscape? Are there opportunities to stay active with art and creativity as a core activity? How can you think of an alternative for governmental support and tap into new sources? There are plenty of opportunities to survive and thrive in the creative economy. The money must come from more individuals and companies; how are you going to tempt these groups? Innovation and international cooperation and technical developments provide opportunities as well as technical developments. It is time to think in opportunities, chances that arise in the market.
Total in Support and Dadara have joined forces to organize a festival to organize, which will produce a counter-voice. In the future you’ll still be able to earn money through art and creativity: Money As Art. It will be a festival in which education, inspiration and art predominate. Both the art- and businessworld as well as art lovers will be present. We will work together, learn from each other and think in a solution-based fashion. On December 1st the Money as Art Festival will take place in the Trouw in Amsterdam.
