About kmentemt

Our art work abdicates itself from the traditional laws of the art market, calls them into question, and ultimately uses the elements and laws or rules of the market as part of its artistic creation process. Due to their imposed artistic rule, which combines number, day and value, Kmentemt creates just one impression a day, but each day one and by that the art work itself determines the financial value and not the artist, the gallery or the ups and downs of the art market.

Money Art: When the price becomes part of the art experience

Nowadays there are more and more people and (social) movements questioning the market as we know, trying to shake his traditional fundaments. Artists are one of them, they paint, cut, sculpture, burn and even eat money, they make fake, art and even false money, and they give money a new meaning, a different task or combine it with an idea for change.

As a definition in progress, let us call them Money Artist = Artists, who question any art of market and are using the elements and laws/rules of the market as part of their artistic creation process.

We are one of them and our artistic focus is on the price as an element; on the formation of prices as a law of the market.

Usually the price is something external for the creation of art: The price is suggested by the artist, doubled by the gallery, influenced by so called art-experts and finally decided by the market. Instead of the price being the result of the market, of demand and supply, we entangle date, number and price – somehow like in physics the quantum entanglement. If one of these elements changes the two others have to follow simultaneously.

Art and its suitors

With all its beauty, glamour, power and money, art attracts one to become a part of it. So, you begin your first work of art, and it feels good!  One thing leads to the other, the work flows, and the ideas rush down like a waterfall! You are enthusiastic and believe that you are part of something bigger. After finishing your work of art you lean back and think to yourself: ”Well done!”. After enjoying this overwhelming feeling, you look up and have the realization, that art, itself, has stolen your work claiming it as its own.  It does not belong to you anymore.  Instead of being thankful for your gift, art pulls at you and says, “That’s it? No way, I want more!”

So you start your next piece and this time it is not so easy. Having lost your innocence, creating turns into hard work. But still, you do your job and create your next work of art, and the next one and the next one.  Your life as an artist goes on. You can barely live from it and realize that you have turned into a slave. Art has become the master of your life. But it is OK, because you feel your work (at least sometimes) deals with the fundamental questions of life and the universe.

You get older, while the cost of living continually increases, your responsibilities also increase. You might even have a partner and a child!  Your needs have become urgent, yet, the big breakthrough has not come.  Daily life is more and more difficult, and more often than not, you are sick of exhausting yourself for art’s sake. That’s the moment when ‘Compromise’ appears on your stage and whispers in your ear; “My dear, you doing such great work and still you get nothing in return. Take me!, and I promise, you will make a living. You might even become famous and rich”. You think of all your unpaid bills and decide, – thinking, “This will just be a small compromise, it will do no harm to me and my work.”

Art and Business

Art does not care at all if its artists can make a living out of it or not. Art does not mind if you behave like a bohemian, like a business man or like an addict. It is not important for art if you are alive, dead or if you art work is unfinished. It does not make a different for art if you sell all your pieces for a good or bad price or if you sell none of your artworks.

One reason is: “Numbers”. Nowadays there are as many people doing art as people lived on earth in the 6th century; art is a success story. Therefore every artist can be replaced; if you don’t do your artistic job, someone else will do it for sure. From my point of view, art has reached a new level of freedom, a new quality by becoming more and more independent from (the life span of) individuals.

The other reason is: “Business is none of arts business, except art is using the elements and laws or rules of the market as part of its artistic creation process.
